How the math works
Because APY already includes compounding, maturity value is
FV = P × (1 + APY)t for whole years, or the monthly-compounded equivalent otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
What does APY mean?
Annual Percentage Yield is the effective yearly return including compounding. A 4% nominal rate compounded monthly is a 4.07% APY — comparing APYs is the apples-to-apples way to shop for CDs.
Are CDs FDIC insured?
CDs at FDIC-member banks are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category — which is what makes them the low-risk anchor of short-term savings.
